About Locronan
Locronan is about 10 km from Douarnenez, on an inland hill. The name comes from Saint Ronan, an Irish‑born hermit who, according to tradition, settled there in the Middle Ages. Devotion to him attracted the dukes of Brittany and made the village a pilgrimage site.
Between the 15th and 17th centuries, Locronan prospered by making hemp canvas for ship sails, sold to shipowners in France and abroad. That wealth left the granite houses around the main square with its public well, many of them protected as historic monuments.
The 15th‑century Church of Saint Ronan occupies one side of the square. Beside it, the Pénity chapel holds the saint’s stone tomb. The interior features stained glass, a carved pulpit depicting Saint Ronan’s life and old statues.
The village holds the labels Petite Cité de Caractère and one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Every July there is the Troménie procession along Saint Ronan’s path; the grand Troménie takes place every six years.
