About Jardin public de Cognac
The public garden occupies part of the former large park of Cognac Castle. In 1889 the town bought the Otard de la Grange mansion to house the town hall, and the surrounding grounds were turned into an English garden based on a design by landscape architect Édouard André.
Over roughly 7 hectares the garden has winding paths, lawns, streams with bridges, large trees, a theatre of greenery and a bandstand. The town hall, with its bell tower and monumental staircase, occupies the centre. After the 1999 storm that brought down many trees, the garden was replanted according to the original plans.
The museum of art and history is located in the garden, installed in a 19th-century eau-de-vie merchant’s mansion known as the house of the merchant. The museum brings together painting, decorative arts, archaeology and the town’s history, and operates together with the Cognac knowledge museum.
In summer the theatre of greenery and the avenues host concerts and city events.
