About Grand Bassin of Castelnaudary
The Grand Bassin was built together with the Canal du Midi, the work of Pierre-Paul Riquet that links Toulouse to the Mediterranean. At about 7 hectares, it is the largest body of water on the whole canal. It served as a reservoir to feed the locks that descend toward Carcassonne and as a port for the barges.
The canal was officially opened in 1681, and Castelnaudary became one of the busiest ports on the route, with quays, warehouses and shipyards. In the middle of the basin, the island of Cybèle, arranged in the 18th century, was used to break the waves raised by the wind.
Today the Grand Bassin is a port for pleasure and rental boats, a departure point for those navigating the Canal du Midi. The quays are a promenade for residents and visitors, and the tree-lined banks continue toward the locks.
The Canal du Midi was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
