About Saint-Roch Locks
The Saint-Roch locks are at the east exit of the Grand Bassin. They are four linked chambers, where the gate of one is the entrance to the next, built around 1678 when the canal reached Castelnaudary. Together they overcome a drop of about 9.4 meters.
The waterfall was used from the start: in 1680 two mills were built next to the locks. Along the bank, a long narrow building housed a ropewalk for a long time.
The locks suffered a collapse in the 20th century and were rebuilt. Today they are automated, but they remain one of the canal’s most popular spots to watch boats rise or fall, chamber by chamber.
Access to the banks is free. The locks are part of the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
