About Halles centrales de Dijon
The Halles centrales de Dijon is the city's covered market, built between 1873 and 1875 in metal architecture. The project came from a proposal by the ateliers of engineer Gustave Eiffel, who was born in Dijon, and the roof is reminiscent of the old markets of Paris.
The building has four pavilions around two crossing aisles. On the columns and arches there are sculpted vine leaves and animal heads that announce what was sold there: game, poultry, fish, meat.
The market operates on the mornings of Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It’s the place to see Burgundy products up close: Époisses cheese, presillé ham (with parsley), escargots, mustard, cassis and pain d'épices. Marché, in French, means fair or market.
Around the Halles are concentrated bars and restaurants with sidewalk tables, busy at lunchtime, which in France is usually between 12:00 and 14:00.
