About National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial
The memorial is located beside the Pentagon’s southwest façade, where American Airlines Flight 77 struck the building on September 11, 2001. It was designed by Julie Beckman and Keith Kaseman and opened to the public on September 11, 2008, seven years after the attack.
There are 184 benches, one for each victim, each set above a small illuminated reflecting pool. The benches are arranged by the victims’ ages, from the youngest, 3 years old, to the oldest, 71. The direction each bench faces indicates where the person was: those who were inside the Pentagon have their names facing the building; those who were on the plane face the sky, toward the direction from which the aircraft came.
The memorial is a place of quiet and is open every day of the year. Plaques on the ground mark the victims’ birth years and help explain the arrangement of the site.
