About Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial)
The memorial honors American Marines who have died in combat since 1775. The bronze sculpture, by artist Felix de Weldon, recreates the scene from Joe Rosenthal’s photograph: six servicemen raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in February 1945. The figures are about 10 meters tall.
The memorial was dedicated on November 10, 1954, the Marine Corps’ birthday, and the following year it came under the administration of the National Park Service as part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. By presidential proclamation in 1961, the flag is flown 24 hours a day.
The monument stands on a raised lawn beside Arlington National Cemetery and the Netherlands Carillon, overlooking the National Mall across the Potomac River. In summer, the Marines hold a weekly sunset parade there.
