About George Washington Masonic National Memorial
The memorial was erected by Masonic lodges in the United States to honor George Washington, who was a Freemason and master of a lodge in Alexandria. Construction began in 1922 and the building was dedicated in 1932, on the bicentennial of Washington’s birth, but interior finishing was only completed in 1970. The design by architect Harvey Wiley Corbett is inspired by the ancient lighthouse of Ostia, near Rome.
The tower is 101 meters tall and sits atop Shooter’s Hill, at the end of King Street. In the main hall there is a bronze statue of Washington about 5 meters tall. The memorial preserves objects connected to him, such as the Bible used at his Masonic initiation.
From the observation deck at the top of the tower, opened in 1953, you can see Old Town Alexandria, the Potomac River and, in the distance, the Washington monuments. Access to the upper floors is by guided tour.
