About General Grant Tree and Grant Grove
Grant Grove is the most visited grove in Kings Canyon and was part of the former General Grant National Park, created in 1890. The General Grant, about 81 meters tall with a base more than 12 meters in diameter, is the second largest tree in the world by volume and one of the widest.
In 1926 it was declared the Nation’s Christmas Tree by President Calvin Coolidge, and since then a Christmas ceremony is held there every year. In 1956 it was designated a national memorial to those who died in the United States’ wars.
An approximately 800-meter paved trail runs through the grove, with several other large sequoias. Along the way are the Fallen Monarch, a fallen hollow trunk that once served as shelter, a bar and a stable, and the Gamlin Cabin, a 19th-century pioneer log cabin.
