About Indian Canyons

The Indian Canyons are on Agua Caliente Cahuilla land, south of Palm Springs at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains. The Cahuilla lived in these canyons for centuries, using the stream water, the palms and desert plants, and traces of their use, like grinding stones, can still be seen there.

The largest is Palm Canyon, about 25 km long, with thousands of California fan palms, the only palm native to the western United States. A trail descends from the trading post to the canyon floor, where the palms form an oasis along the stream. Andreas Canyon has a short, flat trail in the shade of the palms beside a stream, and Murray Canyon leads to small waterfalls.

The canyons are managed by the Agua Caliente themselves, with rangers and marked trails. On some days there are guided walks led by tribal rangers.
