About Manatee Lagoon

Manatee Lagoon is an environmental education center run by the utility FPL next to its Riviera Beach power plant, north of West Palm Beach. The plant returns its cooling water to the lagoon slightly warmer than the surrounding water, and on cold winter days the manatees seek this area to warm up.

The building has two floors of exhibits about the manatee, the lagoon and the county’s marine life, plus a deck and a boardwalk over the water from which the animals can be observed. Besides manatees, it’s common to see pelicans, herons and fish along the shore.

Manatees appear in greater numbers from November to March, especially on mornings after cold fronts, when seawater cools. Outside that period the exhibits and the lagoon view remain open. There is no entrance fee.
