About Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens
Morikami occupies land donated by George Sukeji Morikami, one of the last members of the Yamato colony, formed by Japanese farmers who settled in this part of Florida in the early 20th century. The colony didn’t last, but Morikami remained, prospered and donated the land to create a park in memory of the settlers. The museum opened in 1977.
The gardens, called Roji-en, sit around a lake and follow styles of Japanese gardens from different periods, from stroll gardens to a rock-and-sand garden. The path is about 1.5 km, with bridges, waterfalls, bamboo, bonsai and shaded benches.
The museum has exhibits on Japanese culture and on the history of the Yamato colony, and a tea house where demonstrations take place on scheduled days. The park also hosts Japanese festivals throughout the year.
