About Gumbo Limbo Nature Center
The Gumbo Limbo Nature Center sits on the narrow strip of land between the Atlantic and the Intracoastal Waterway in Boca Raton. The name comes from a native tree, the gumbo-limbo, with reddish peeling bark that’s common in the region’s coastal scrub.
The most visited area is the outdoor tanks with sea turtles in rehabilitation, often green and loggerhead turtles treated after injuries or illness and returned to the sea when recovered. There are also aquariums with fish and invertebrates from the reefs and mangroves of the coast.
An elevated boardwalk crosses the scrub and mangroves to an observation tower, with views of the canopy and the water. From March to October, the county’s turtle nesting season, the center often runs guided night walks for nesting, by reservation.
