About Zoo Miami

The zoo began in 1948 on Key Biscayne and moved to southern Miami‑Dade County onto a former Navy site, opening in 1980 as Miami MetroZoo. Today it is called Zoo Miami and covers about 300 hectares.

The animals live in spacious, barless enclosures separated from the public by moats, and are grouped by regions: Asia, with orangutans, elephants, Indian rhinoceros, and Sumatran tigers; Africa, with giraffes, elephants, chimpanzees, and okapis; Australia, with koalas and cassowaries; and the Amazon and Beyond area, dedicated to South America. The Florida area, Mission Everglades, showcases the state’s own wildlife.

South Florida’s climate allows most animals to remain outdoors year‑round. The distances between areas are large: many visitors rent bicycles or battery carts on site to get around the circuit.
