About Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden was founded in 1936 by accountant and plant collector Robert H. Montgomery on land near Biscayne Bay, and opened to the public in 1938. The name honors David Fairchild, a botanist and explorer who introduced thousands of useful plant species to the United States and was a friend of Montgomery.

The roughly 34 hectares contain lakes, lawns, and collections organized by plant groups. The palms and cycads are among the largest collections of their kind in the world; there is also a tropical rainforest area with waterfalls and Amazonian plants, and the Wings of the Tropics conservatory, where tropical butterflies fly freely among the plants.

The garden is also dedicated to research and conservation of the flora of southern Florida and the Caribbean. You can visit on foot along shaded paths or take a guided tram tour that gives an overview before exploring the areas you want to see.
