About Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
The park occupies the southern third of Key Biscayne, which is connected to Miami by a bridge. It is named for Bill Baggs, a Miami journalist who campaigned to preserve the area. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 knocked down most of the Australian pines, an invasive species, opening space for the recovery of native coastal scrub and mangrove vegetation.
The Cape Florida Lighthouse is the oldest standing structure in the Miami region. The surrounding area was a route of escape in the early 19th century for enslaved people and Black Seminoles who departed from there to the Bahamas, a history the park records.
The beach, with more than 1.5 km of sand facing the Atlantic, is used for swimming and snorkeling and has appeared on lists of the best beaches in the United States. There are bike lanes and trails, and the seawall along the bay is used for fishing.
