About The Bass (Bass Museum of Art)

The building was erected in the early 1930s as the city’s library and arts center, designed by Russell Pancoast, grandson of pioneer John Collins, who donated the park in front. The facade of local limestone with decorative reliefs is an example of Art Deco applied to a public building. In 1963 the city received the collection from John and Johanna Bass, and the museum opened the following year.

The founding collection contains European paintings and sculptures dating from the 15th century, as well as textiles, tapestries and religious garments. Today the museum focuses mainly on contemporary art: temporary exhibitions bring artists from various countries and are presented in dialogue with the older works in the collection.

A wing designed by Arata Isozaki was added in the early 2000s, and a renovation completed in 2017 expanded the galleries. Outside, Collins Park features sculptures and is one block from the beach, in the stretch of Miami Beach north of South Beach.
