About South Pointe Park

South Pointe Park occupies about 7 hectares at the southern end of Miami Beach island, where the Government Cut canal separates the island from Fisher Island and gives passage to ships bound for the Port of Miami. The area was once industrial and housed police facilities before becoming a park, opened in 1985 and redesigned in the late 2000s.

The park has lawns with gentle rises, a wide limestone promenade, a playground for children and direct access to the beach. The pier, rebuilt and reopened after years closed, extends over the canal and allows close views of cruise ships and cargo vessels.

In the late afternoon many people come to walk or run on the promenade, which continues north along South Beach. The view includes the ocean, Fisher Island and the downtown Miami buildings on the other side of the bay.
