About Rose Bowl Stadium

The Rose Bowl was built in the Arroyo Seco, the tree-lined valley west of downtown Pasadena, and hosted its first game in October 1922. The design is by architect Myron Hunt. The stadium was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1987 and is also a California historical civil engineering landmark.

The name comes from the Rose Bowl Game, the college football game organized at New Year’s by the Tournament of Roses, the same organization behind the Rose Parade. The stadium is also home to the UCLA football team.

Throughout the 20th century the Rose Bowl entered the history of other sports. Major music tours also stop there.

On the second Sunday of each month the stadium parking lots host the Rose Bowl Flea Market, a large market of antiques, furniture, clothing and used items. On other days residents walk, run and cycle on the roughly 5 km circuit that surrounds the stadium and the Brookside golf course, with the San Gabriel Mountains in the background.
