About Norton Simon Museum
The Norton Simon Museum occupies the building constructed for the former Pasadena Art Museum, opened in 1969. In 1974, an agreement with businessman and collector Norton Simon led the museum to receive his collection and change its name. The façade is covered with thousands of glazed tiles by ceramist Edith Heath, and the interior was renovated in the 1990s under architect Frank Gehry.
The European collection spans from the Renaissance to the 20th century. It includes three portraits by Rembrandt, works by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters such as Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh, and one of the largest bodies of work by Degas, with more than a hundred paintings, drawings and sculptures.
Another major area is South and Southeast Asian art: stone and bronze sculptures from India and other regions of South and Southeast Asia, including bronzes from the Chola dynasty. The museum also holds Japanese prints.
In the garden, around a pond, are bronze sculptures by Rodin and other artists. The museum is at the corner of Colorado Boulevard and Orange Grove Boulevard, the starting point of the Rose Parade.
