About Gamble House

The Gamble House was built between 1908 and 1909 as the winter home of David and Mary Gamble, members of an industrial family from Ohio. The project was by brothers Charles and Henry Greene, Pasadena architects known for houses in the Craftsman style, the American version of the Arts and Crafts movement.

The house stands out for its wide eaves, sleeping porches and integration with the garden. Inside, nearly everything was designed by the architects: woods such as teak, maple, oak and mahogany hand-worked, light fixtures, stained glass and custom furniture made for each room.

The couple spent their winters there for the rest of their lives and later their heirs gave the house to the city of Pasadena. The Gamble House was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977 and is today managed by an organization affiliated with the city, which keeps the original furnishings in place.

Interior visits are guided, in small groups, and show how details repeat from the staircase to the doorknobs. On the surrounding streets, other houses by the Greene brothers and their contemporaries can be seen from the sidewalk.
