About The Broad
The Broad opened in September 2015 on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles to display the contemporary art collection of collectors Eli and Edythe Broad, who funded the building. The design, by the firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, is based on the idea of the veil and the vault: a white, perforated skin wraps the concrete core that houses the technical reserve, glimpsed by visitors from the stairways.
The collection includes about 2,000 works by roughly 200 artists, primarily from the second half of the 20th century onward. Works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman and Kara Walker, among others, are displayed in large galleries lit from the ceiling.
One of the most sought-after works is the Infinity Mirrored Room by Yayoi Kusama, a room of mirrors and lights that gives the sensation of endless space; access is in small groups for a brief period. Visiting the collection galleries is free, but usually requires a timed reservation, and temporary exhibitions may have an admission fee.
