About Los Angeles County Museum of Art

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, LACMA, was founded in 1961 after the division of an older museum and opened on Wilshire Boulevard in 1965. It is the largest art museum in the western United States, with a collection of more than 120,000 works ranging from Antiquity to contemporary art, including Asian, Latin American and Islamic art as well as European and American painting.

The campus underwent a major transformation. The David Geffen Galleries, designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, opened to the public in May 2026 and display up to 3,000 works from the collection on a single elevated floor above the boulevard. The Broad Contemporary Art Museum, from 2008, and the Resnick Pavilion, from 2010, host modern and contemporary art and major temporary exhibitions.

Two outdoor works have become city landmarks: Urban Light, by Chris Burden, with 202 cast-iron lamp posts that came from Los Angeles streets and light up at dusk, and Levitated Mass, by Michael Heizer, a 340-ton rock under which visitors walk along a ramp. The museum is next to the La Brea Tar Pits and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
