About Gatekeeper's Museum
The Gatekeeper's Museum is in Tahoe City, next to the small dam that controls Lake Tahoe’s outflow to the Truckee River. The building recreates the home of the old dam keeper, who opened and closed gates to manage the lake level.
Maintained by the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society, the museum tells the region’s story: the Washoe people, the steamships that crossed the lake, logging, the old hotels and the 1960 Winter Olympics. A separate wing houses a collection of basketry from various North American indigenous peoples.
Beside it are the dam and Fanny Bridge, the bridge over the Truckee River from which large trout can be seen in the clear water.
