About Tallac Historic Site

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, wealthy San Francisco families built summer homes on Lake Tahoe’s south shore. The Tallac Historic Site brings together three neighboring estates from that era: the Pope Estate, the Baldwin Estate and Valhalla, with wooden houses, gardens, ponds and guest cabins.

The Pope Estate is the most complete, with the main house, staff houses and gardens. The Baldwin Estate houses a museum about the region’s history and the Washoe people who lived around the lake. Valhalla, with a large stone-and-wood hall, hosts concerts and events in summer.

The properties sit beneath tall pines, next to Kiva Beach and Baldwin Beach, and are connected by flat trails. Guided tours are offered in summer.
