About Ermita dels Peixets
According to tradition, in 1348 the parish priest of Alboraia was taking communion to a sick person in Almàssera when, while crossing the swollen Carraixet ravine, he fell from his horse. The reliquary with the hosts was recovered, but the hosts were lost in the current; days later, fish reportedly appeared at the mouth holding them in their mouths. The episode became known as the Miracle dels Peixets, the miracle of the little fish.
The hermitage was erected at the site indicated by tradition, on the right bank of the ravine facing the sea. It is neo‑Gothic in style, with a rectangular plan, buttresses with pinnacles and an ogival arched door. Above the entrance, ceramic letters read Ermita del Milagro with the year 1907; tourist sources give 1901 as the construction date.
Inside, beside the high altar, a ceramic panel depicts the miracle. Next to the hermitage stands the Font dels Peixets, from 1959. The three fish also appear on Alboraia’s coat of arms.
Every year, on the Monday after Pentecost, residents make a pilgrimage from the town to the hermitage, with mass and a communal meal. It is the day when the interior is usually open.
