About Casteller Museum of Catalonia
Castells are human towers that groups called colles build in Catalonia’s squares during festivals. The tradition was recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Valls presents itself as their place of origin, and the Plaça del Blat, in the historic center, is called the zero kilometer of the casteller world.
The Museu Casteller de Catalunya stands next to that square, in a building designed by architect Dani Freixes that links the Plaça del Blat to the Plaça de l'Oli. It was created by Valls town hall, the Generalitat, the Diputació de Tarragona and the coordination of the colles of Catalonia.
The visit is organized in three acts: the impulse to climb, connected to strength and courage; judgment and balance, which explain the technique, the pinya at the base and the figures; and the relationship of the castells with music, festivals and towns. There are audiovisual resources and spaces where the visitor can experience the sensation of being in the pinya.
In the square next door the castells are raised at the Sant Joan and Santa Úrsula festivals, and the monument to the Xiquets de Valls stands nearby.
