About Ferreres Aqueduct (Pont del Diable)
The Ferreres aqueduct, known as the Pont del Diable, is one of the best-preserved sections of the system that supplied Tarraco with water from the Francolí River. It was built in the time of Emperor Augustus, according to most sources, and crosses a small valley to the north of the city.
The visible section is about 217 meters long and nearly 27 meters high at its highest point, with two superimposed rows of stone arches. The channel that carried the water runs over the upper arches, and it is possible to walk along it.
The name comes from a legend: the devil supposedly built the bridge in one night in exchange for the soul of the first to cross it, and the locals made an animal go first. The aqueduct is part of the archaeological ensemble of Tarraco, a World Heritage site.
Around it there is a park with waymarked trails that let you see the arches from below and above. Access to the park and bridge is free.
