About Tarragona Amphitheatre

The Tarraco amphitheater was built in the 2nd century, outside the city walls, on a slope next to the sea. Part of the seating was cut into the rock itself, and the side facing the beach was supported by built structures. There the city watched gladiator fights and animal spectacles.

In the 3rd century, according to Christian tradition, Bishop Fructuosus and the deacons Augurius and Eulogius were executed in the arena. In their memory, a Visigothic basilica was built on the site and, centuries later, a Romanesque church, whose remains are still visible in the center of the enclosure.

The monument is one of the venues of the Museu d'Història de Tarragona and belongs to the archeological ensemble of Tarraco, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. From the top of the stands you can see Miracle Beach and the sea.

The visit covers the arena, the galleries and the seating. There is a combined ticket with other Roman sites in the city; opening hours vary by season.
