About Dunajec Gorge (Prielom Dunajca)

The Prielom Dunajca is the roughly 9 km gorge the Dunajec River cut through the Pieniny, just below Červený Kláštor. On the Slovak bank runs an educational trail, one of the first of its kind in former Czechoslovakia, which follows the river to the mouth of the Lesnica stream near the village of the same name.

The path is wide and almost flat, used by pedestrians and cyclists, and also accessible to people with reduced mobility. Panels along the route explain the rocks, the Dunajec’s fish, the forests and the cliffs, such as the Seven Monks rocks (Sedem mníchov) and, on the Polish side, Sokolica. From the path you can see the rafts descending the river.

The trail starts a few minutes from the Červený Kláštor monastery. Many people go down by raft and return on foot or by a bicycle rented in the village. In Lesnica the trail connects to other routes across the Pieniny and to the border with Poland.
