About Červený Kláštor Monastery
The Červený Kláštor Monastery was founded in 1319 by the local noble Kokos Berzevici and handed over to Carthusian monks, an order dedicated to silence and isolation. The complex sits on the bank of the Dunajec River at the entrance to the Pieniny gorge, and the popular name “red monastery” is, according to tradition, due to the color of its walls and roofs.
In the 18th century the monastery passed to the Camaldolese monks. The most remembered of them is Brother Cyprian (Cyprián), who cultivated medicinal plants, created an herbarium and, according to legend, built a flying machine. The order left the monastery at the end of the 18th century.
The complex, a national cultural monument, has been restored and now operates as a museum. The visit includes the Gothic church, the monks’ cells and exhibitions about monastic life and the region’s history. It is the natural starting point for the Dunajec gorge trail.
