About Kartusián Monastery Kláštorisko

Kláštorisko is a clearing on the high plateau of the Slovak Paradise, above the Hornád canyon. In the 14th century Carthusian monks founded a monastery there, in the place that, according to tradition, local people had used as a refuge from the Mongol invasions of the previous century. The name means, in Slovak, “the place of the monastery.”

The monastery was abandoned in the 16th century and fell into ruin. From the second half of the 20th century volunteers began excavating and preserving the remains, and today you can see the foundations of the church, parts of the walls and the monks’ cells, with explanatory panels.

The clearing is the main trail junction of the park’s north. Paths that climb the Suchá Belá and Kláštorská roklina gorges and trails coming from the Hornád canyon and Čingov converge there. A refuge with a restaurant and wooden chalets operates beside the ruins, making Kláštorisko the usual lunch stop on day circuits.

There is no road open to cars to the top: you reach it on foot, by one of the trails, in one to two hours depending on the starting point.
