About New Synagogue (Nová synagóga)
The New Synagogue of Žilina (Nová synagóga) was built between 1928 and 1931 for the city’s neological Jewish community, to a design by German architect Peter Behrens, who taught Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. It is Behrens’ only work in Slovakia. The building replaced an older synagogue from 1881 on the same site.
The structure, with modern lines and a dome over the central hall, served as a synagogue for only a few years. After World War II, when most of the city’s Jewish community had been murdered in the Holocaust, it underwent several renovations and, by the late 20th century, housed a cinema.
From 2012, a cultural association restored the building, recovering the original space, and opened it to the public in 2016 as a kunsthalle: a contemporary art exhibition center without a permanent collection, hosting temporary shows, debates and concerts.
