About Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (Katedrála Najsvätejšej Trojice)

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (Katedrála Najsvätejšej Trojice) was built around 1400 on a terrace above the present Andreja Hlinku Square, on the site of a 13th-century fortification. Over the centuries it also served defensive purposes, suffered fires in 1678 and 1848 and underwent several reconstructions that gave it its present Renaissance appearance.

Next to the church rises the Burian Tower (Burianova veža), one of Slovakia’s oldest Renaissance bell towers, which also had a defensive role. Church and tower received new roofs after the fire of 1886 and form the city’s most photographed view, seen from below on Andreja Hlinku Square or from the stairway that climbs to them.

In 2008, with the creation of the Diocese of Žilina, the parish church became a cathedral. The interior houses the high altar dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The church remains active, and the interior opens according to the parish calendar.
