About Strečno Castle (Hrad Strečno)
Strečno Castle (Hrad Strečno) crowns a 103-meter limestone cliff above the Váh River, in the Strečno gorge where the river cuts through the Malá Fatra. The first written mention dates to 1384. The castle watched over the valley pass and the trade road that followed the Váh, and belonged to kings and noble families through the centuries.
The most remembered resident is Žofia Bosniaková, a 17th-century noblewoman known for her charity, whose story is told in the exhibition. Abandoned after the 18th century, the castle became a ruin and was partly reconstructed at the end of the 20th century. Today it is managed by the Považie Museum, with displays about its history, the main tower and the chapel.
From the top of the rock the view opens to the gorge, the bend of the Váh and the Malá Fatra mountains. On the opposite riverbank lie the ruins of Starhrad, the old castle. In summer, wooden rafts float down the Váh below the castle, continuing the tradition of the river’s old rafters.

How to get there
In the village of Strečno, about 12 km from Žilina, reachable by train and bus. From the parking below the castle the uphill walk takes 15 to 20 minutes.
Tip
Combine the visit with a raft trip on the Váh or with the walk to the ruins of Starhrad on the other side of the river, via the marked trail that starts at the village bridge.
