About Vrátna Valley

The Vrátna valley (Vrátna dolina) is the heart of Malá Fatra National Park. The entrance, about 3 km from Terchová, goes through the Tiesňavy gorge, where the road runs between rock walls. Shortly after, the valley opens and splits: one branch leads to the settlement of Štefanová; the other ends, after about 3 km, at the lower station of the cable car.

The eight-seat gondola rises roughly 750 meters to near Snilovské sedlo, a saddle at 1,524 meters on the main ridge. From there, a climb of about 40 minutes leads to Veľký Kriváň, at 1,709 meters, the highest point of Malá Fatra, and a shorter one reaches Chleb, at 1,647 meters. On a clear day, you can see Veľká Fatra and the Tatras.

In winter, the valley is a ski area, with slopes at Paseky and around Chleb. In summer, besides the trails, there is a chairlift at Paseky and family-friendly paths on the valley floor. The road has bus stops from Terchová and from Žilina.
