About Veľký Rozsutec (Rozsutec)

Veľký Rozsutec, at 1,609.7 meters, is the most characteristic mountain of Malá Fatra: a block of limestone and dolomite with steep walls that stands out from the ridge and appears on the national park’s logo. It and its smaller neighbor, Malý Rozsutec, at 1,343 meters, have formed the Rozsutec national nature reserve since 1967, rich in rare plants and animals.

The ascent is demanding. The most used routes start from Štefanová, pass the Medziholie saddle and follow the rocky ridge to the summit, with sections of chains and exposed rock. Another option is to approach via the Jánošíkove diery gorges and Malý Rozsutec in a long circuit. Tradition says Jánošík hid a treasure in the massif.

To protect wildlife during the breeding season, the Medziholie–Veľký Rozsutec–Medzirozsutec section is closed every year, generally from March 1 to June 15. From the summit the view covers the Malá Fatra ridge, Stoh, the Vrátna valley and, on clear days, the Tatras.
