About Jánošíkove diery (Jánošík's Holes)

Jánošíkove diery is a system of gorges and canyons carved by the Diery stream (Dierový potok) in the limestone of Malá Fatra, east of Terchová. The name recalls the bandit Juraj Jánošík, who, according to tradition, hid in the area. The complex is divided into three parts: Dolné diery, Horné diery and Nové diery.

The trails follow the streambed between rock walls and pass more than 20 waterfalls and pools. Metal ladders, bridges, wooden walkways and chains help on the narrow sections, giving the hike some adventure without requiring climbing technique. Dolné diery is the easiest section; Horné diery has more ladders and cascades.

The most used trailheads are Biely Potok, on the Terchová–Zázrivá road, and Štefanová, in the Vrátna valley. The gorges connect to the trails that ascend Malý and Veľký Rozsutec. In winter, parts of the route become ice-covered and may be closed.
