About State Theatre Košice (Štátne divadlo Košice)

The State Theatre of Košice (Štátne divadlo Košice) occupies the center of Hlavná Street, north of St. Elizabeth Cathedral. The building, in neo-Baroque style, was constructed at the end of the 19th century, when the city was one of the wealthiest in the northeast of the Kingdom of Hungary and had a long tradition of performances. The façade features sculptures and the dome marks the street perspective.

Inside, the main auditorium follows the horseshoe theatre model, with boxes, ceiling paintings and gilded decoration. After nearly a century of use, the building underwent a full restoration that returned it to its original appearance. The theatre houses opera, ballet and drama companies, and the season generally runs from autumn to spring.

Between the theatre and the cathedral is a garden with the singing fountain, which projects jets of water coordinated with music and lights, and next to it a carillon. In summer this space is the busiest in the city, with locals and visitors seated on the benches and on the fountain edges.

Those who want to see the interior without attending a performance can ask at the box office about guided tours, which depend on the programme.
