About Samobor Castle
Stari grad Samobor is on Tepec hill, west of the center. According to the town’s tourism office, it was built around 1270 by supporters of King Otakar II of Bohemia during the disputes over control of the region. Over the centuries it belonged to several noble families, who expanded its defenses and living areas.
The castle was inhabited until the end of the 18th century, when its owners abandoned it. In the early 20th century the town of Samobor bought the ruins, which today are part of the landscape visible from the square and surrounding hills.
Fragments of walls remain, as well as tower remains and the chapel, among the trees. From the top you can see Samobor’s center and the valley where the town spreads out.
The climb starts near the square and follows the Gradna stream on a dirt path. The final section is uneven and becomes slippery after rain; many visitors return via the Anindol wood, passing the chapel of Saint Anne.
