A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

Zagreb opens a trip through Croatia with hilly streets, museums and trams. The Upper Town preserves a layout of short streets and stairways, while the Lower Town has more regular blocks. The capital deserves time for walking and visiting collections before heading to the coast.

The route south passes through Slunj. There, Rastoke displays a landscape of mills and canals at the confluence of rivers. Staying overnight in that area allows you to devote another day to the Plitvice lakes, without making the park a rushed stop between long journeys.

Winter is usually cold inland and summer usually has long days. Croatian uses the Latin alphabet; English appears in tourism services. Buses connect the bases, but a car makes the rural section easier.

This destination brings together 2 cities: Zagreb, Slunj.

Things to do in Zagreb

Gornji grad
Zagreb · Cidade de Zagreb · Historic centre

Gornji grad

Gornji grad occupies the upper part of Zagreb, where short streets and stairways link squares and old houses. The neighborhood differs from the regular grid of the lower town: here the walk follows the terrain and passes through gateways and façades from different eras.

Rastoke
Slunj · Karlovac · Historic ensemble

Rastoke

Rastoke is the cluster of houses and old mills at the meeting of the Slunjčica and Korana rivers, in Slunj. Watercourses split into canals and small drops between wooden and stone buildings. The visit addresses both the use of water and the landscape.

Muzej prekinutih veza
Zagreb · Cidade de Zagreb · Museum

Muzej prekinutih veza

The Muzej prekinutih veza, in Zagreb’s Upper Town, collects objects donated after relationships end. The items gain meaning through the stories of those who donated them: the collection deals with emotional bonds through shared mementos, not objects chosen for their material value.

Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera
Slunj · Karlovac · National park

Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera

The Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera protects a sequence of lakes separated by travertine barriers in inland Croatia. Water flows over drops between forest and cliffs, forming waterfalls of various sizes. The landscape results from the relationship between rock, water and the organisms involved in forming those barriers.

Park Maksimir

Park Maksimir lies east of Zagreb’s center and offers a landscape of avenues, clearings, wooded areas and lakes. It’s a different outing from the cobbled streets of the Upper Town: the interest is in the park’s layout and the time spent walking among trees.
