About Petroglyph Provincial Park

Petroglyph Provincial Park protects rock carvings made by the ancestors of the Snuneymuxw in south Nanaimo, near where the Nanaimo River flows into the Northumberland Channel. The designs, carved into sandstone, are over a thousand years old according to the provincial parks agency, and show human figures, animals and beings from the spiritual world of the coastal peoples.

The park covers about 2 hectares and was created in 1948. A short trail leads through the forest to the carved surfaces. Near the entrance there are concrete replicas of the petroglyphs, made so visitors can see the designs up close without wearing down the originals.

The site has spiritual significance for the Snuneymuxw. Stay on the trails and do not touch or step on the original carvings.
