The city

What to expect from Nanaimo.

Port city on the east coast of Vancouver Island, on Snuneymuxw territory, facing the Strait of Georgia. It began in 1852 around the Hudson's Bay Company coal mines; the Bastion, the city’s oldest building, is a remaining remnant. From the waterfront a path runs along the marinas to Maffeo Sutton Park, where the passenger boat to Saysutshun departs. It is also the city that gives its name to the Nanaimo bar.
