About Talbot House
Talbot House is on Gasthuisstraat, in the center of Poperinge, a town about 12 kilometers west of Ypres that, during the First World War, lay out of range of most artillery. Hundreds of thousands of British soldiers passed through on their way to the front. In December 1915, chaplains Philip Clayton, “Tubby,” and Neville Talbot rented the house from a hop merchant to open a club.
The name honors Gilbert Talbot, Neville’s brother, who was killed that year. The house rule was that rank did not matter inside: officers and privates shared the rooms, the library, the piano, and the garden. The abbreviation TH, signaled in the flag semaphore alphabet as Toc H, became the name of the movement Clayton founded after the war.
The attic, formerly used for storing bedding, became the chapel called the Upper Room. The altar is a carpenter’s bench found near the house, and the room contains objects donated by soldiers and the original cross from Gilbert Talbot’s grave. The house remains much as it was, with the kitchen, the rooms, and the original staircase.
In the garden, the old hop-shed, used as a concert hall during the war, now houses the exhibition on soldiers’ life behind the lines. The house still hosts guests and serves tea to visitors, as it did for the soldiers.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
An hour and a half to two hours, including the house, the museum, and the garden.
Best time
Year-round, during daytime. Combine it with an afternoon in Poperinge, returning to Ypres before the Last Post ceremony at the Menenpoort. Check opening times before you go.
How to get there
By train, Poperinge is a few minutes from Ypres on the line from Kortrijk; from the station to Gasthuisstraat is about a ten-minute walk. By car, it is about 15 minutes from Ypres via the N38 road.
Tip
Go up to the Upper Room slowly: the staircase is narrow and steep, as it was. Beside it, in Poperinge’s town hall, are the cells and the execution post where soldiers condemned for desertion spent their last hours—a harsh but important complement to the visit.
