About Place du Marché aux Légumes
The Place du Marché aux Légumes, the vegetable market square, is the heart of old Namur's nightlife. It surrounds the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and is bordered by brick and stone houses, with ground floors occupied by bars, cafés and restaurants with pavement seating.
Nearby are other sights on the centre walk. Place d'Armes, a few minutes away, is the main square, with the Palais des Congrès and, just behind it, the Beffroi. Place d'Armes hosts the statue of the composer Nicolas Bosret, and it is there that, during the Fêtes de Wallonie in September, the Roi des Menteurs (king of liars) is crowned.
Narrow streets lead down from the square to the Sambre. Rue des Brasseurs, the brewers' street, runs parallel to the river with old façades, shops and restaurants. Small bronze statues by the artist Isaac Cordal are scattered around the centre; the tourist office provides a map to find them.
At dusk, when the terraces fill up, the square becomes a meeting point for students and locals. It's a good place to try the local beer and péket, the juniper spirit typical of Valônia, in moderation.
