About Félicien Rops Museum

Félicien Rops was born in Namur in 1833 and became one of the best-known engravers of the 19th century. He worked in Brussels and Paris, illustrated books by writers such as Baudelaire, and became famous for satirical, erotic and provocative images that shocked the morals of the time.

The museum opened in 1987 in an hôtel de maître, a town mansion, on Rue Fumal, near the house where Rops was born. The building dates from the 17th century and was raised in a Neoclassical style in 1850. An extension added exhibition rooms and technical reserves.

The collection comprises about 270 works, mainly prints, watercolours, drawings and paintings, organised by theme and chronologically. There are also letters, documents and sketchbooks that show the artist's working process.

In addition to the permanent collection, the museum mounts temporary exhibitions that link Rops to other artists and to 19th-century themes. Some works contain erotic content: parents may wish to check the route before entering with young children.
