About Fort de Huy

The Fort de Huy occupies the rock that overlooks the Meuse (Mosa) and the town, on the site of Li Tchestia, the old castle and one of Huy's four wonders. It was built from 1818, when the region was part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, as part of a line of fortresses against France, the so-called Wellington barrier.

The fort was never truly attacked, but it took on a tragic role in World War II: during the German occupation it was used as a prison, through which more than 7,000 people passed, including resistance members, hostages and political prisoners. Many were later sent to concentration camps.

Today the fort houses a memorial about that period, with cells, documents and objects, and a route through the galleries and courtyards. From the top of the ramparts, the view opens over the Meuse, the collegiate church and the town.

In season, a cable car runs from the riverbank near Esplanada Batta, stops at the fort and continues to the La Sarte plain, where the Mont Mosan amusement park is located. The fort and the cable car usually operate from April to autumn; check dates and opening times.
