About Château de Freÿr
Château de Freÿr is on the left bank of the Mosa, between Waulsort and Dinant, in the municipality of Hastière. A medieval castle once stood on the site and passed to the Beaufort-Spontin family in the early 15th century. The current building is Renaissance in style and served as the summer residence of the dukes of Beaufort-Spontin. Descendants of the family still live there.
The interior is furnished and decorated by generations of inhabitants, with reception rooms, paintings and objects that tell the story of the family and the royal guests who visited the château.
The 18th‑century French-style gardens, in the manner of Le Nôtre, step down in terraces to the river, with reflecting pools, jets and small hedge mazes. The orange trees, some centuries old, are kept in pots and overwinter in greenhouses.
The château and gardens normally open during the spring and summer season, with specific days and hours; check in advance and book if necessary.
