About Abbatiale Notre-Dame d'Hastière
The church of Notre-Dame de Hastière is located in Hastière-par-delà, on the right bank of the Mosa. It is the former church of a Benedictine priory linked to the abbey of Waulsort, and the Romanesque nave dates from the 11th century. Later, the church received a Gothic choir.
Inside, the church houses a crypt beneath the high altar, with archaeological remains of the former monastery, and carved choir stalls with misericords — small folding seats where monks leaned during long prayers. In the choir there is an image of the Virgin and Child, venerated by pilgrims, and a triptych by the painter Auguste Donnay depicting the legend of Saint Walhère.
The tower and the simple stone nave are among the best-preserved examples of Romanesque art in the Mosa valley.
The church usually opens in season, and guided visits to the crypt and the tower are available on request; check opening times in advance.
