About Annevoie Gardens

The Jardins d'Annevoie are in Anhée, in the Meuse valley, about ten kilometres north of Dinant. They were created from 1758 by Charles-Alexis de Montpellier, from a family of master blacksmiths who became wealthy through the region's iron industry.

The design combines three ways of dealing with nature. In the French garden, art corrects nature, with symmetry and designed flower beds. In the Italian, art works together with nature, in terraces and fountains. In the English, art imitates nature, as in the Cascade anglaise and the Grotte de Neptune, made entirely by hand.

Water is the guiding thread of the visit. Fountains, cascades, channels and reflecting pools run on water that comes down from the hills, using the change in levels of the terrain. The family's castle stands in the middle of the park and is viewed from the outside.

The gardens opened to the public in the 1930s and are classified as important heritage of Valônia. The estate was enlarged and underwent a long restoration of the fountains and paths.
